Union learning representatives are enthusiasts and advocates for learning. Their precise role will vary according to their own circumstances, but usually includes:
- raising awareness of lifelong learning issues in the workplace, especially for non-traditional learners
- helping to identify and articulate the learning needs of particular groups of members/potential members
- contacting members and potential members about how their union can assist them in their development
- supporting members who are on learning programmes
- signposting potential learners to possible providers
- representing and negotiating on behalf of members on issues around learning.
Union learning representatives have a legal entitlement to paid time off to train and carry out their roles. In addition, union members can take reasonable time off during working hours for the purposes of accessing a union learning rep.
