National Tests

National Tests cover Skills for Life (reading, writing and maths) at Levels 1 and 2 and can act as a passport to further learning and progression at work.

The tests are designed to:

Many employers and higher education courses now recognise the tests at Level 2 as an alternative to or progression towards a GCSE. Higher Level Teaching Assistants need to achieve a Level 2 qualification in literacy and numeracy. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) recognise the successful completion of these tests for the HLTA Status.

The tests are multiple-choice and each of them takes about an hour to complete. You can take the tests online, or complete a written paper.

You can prepare yourself for the National Tests at a local college, ask your UNISON learning rep for details of what's available locally.

You can also prepare for the tests at the Move On website, where you can download free learning materials, take a practice test and find a centre where you can take the tests online.
