School secretaries play a crucial role in the day-to-day life of a school by providing a wide range of administrative support to keep everything running as smoothly as possible.
Secretaries usually spend the majority of their time answering the phone; typing letters and reports for the head; dealing with incoming and outgoing mail; printing and photocopying; and keeping records of pupils and staff.
They're often responsible for sending key educational data about the school to the Department for Education and Skills.
School secretaries need:
No formal academic qualifications are usually required, but a good standard of education is expected with a proper grasp of English and maths. A secretarial qualification is useful and experience of office work and computer literacy are nearly always required.
